In episode 5, Alia Janine and Jaqi Furback sit down and talk about where feminism came from, what feminism means, why we need it, and what the fuck happened to it. In today’s society it is hard to tell what the true meaning of feminism is. As Jaqi points out, there are eight different “types” of feminism on it’s Wikipedia page. EIGHT. We’re pretty sure the women back in 1848 did not have eight different types or definitions of feminism. They had one purpose – one goal, to be treated equally to their male counterparts.
Since the first Women’s Conference in 1848, it took 70 years before women were legally allowed to vote. It wasn’t until 1928 that ALL women were allowed vote. Not only those with privilege and over 30 years old. Women also were allowed to own property then. In the 1940s and 1950s during World War II women were pushed into the work force, leaving their families to fend for themselves. With this, Welfare was created to help those that could not work. That’s right Republicans, women started Welfare. As if they needed another reason to hate it. In the 1960s and 1970s the feminist movement really took off, just like women’s bras. The Pill was created, meaning women had more control over their own bodies and what they wanted to do with them. And if the pill did not work, well, abortion became legal. Throughout this fun little history lesson, every decade since 1848 there was one thing women fought for consistently, and are still fighting today in 2015 – equal pay.
So, what the fuck happened to feminism? In today’s society of male dominance, technological advancements, and open sexuality the true meaning of feminism has been through a blender, spit out, and then put back in. Some women think of feminism as an excuse to hate men, or to fuck everything in sight. Some think of it as weapon to use against an oppressed gender. But have they taken feminism to the extreme, and have obscured the true meaning of it? Listen in as we discuss what we think happened, and why!
